President of the Houston Film Critics Society.

I watch movies. I watch films. I watch cinema.
A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE makes its arrival to 4K UHD this week from @criterion.bsky.social I don't think enough people talk about it. It has the beats of a straightforward thriller but with commentary about confrontation.

It also marked a David Cronenberg renaissance with Viggo Mortensen as the star.

Locked in. That's Paul Thomas Anderson's ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER.

Viva la revolution!

My take on why box office matters, but why movies matter more.

Listening to @scottmendelson.bsky.social on THE TOWN recently helped spur this column.

EDDINGTON: The most COVID of COVID movies.

This coming from a guy that saw it in an auditorium with like five other people, all of whom were at least six feet away from me.

Too bad mainstream media is concentrating on the politics of SUPERMAN and not what Ari Aster captures in his anti-western.

For real.

After being stuck in Chicago for the better part of a week (ugh), I finally got the @secondsightfilms.bsky.social release of THE NICE GUYS.

I'm not one to usually complain about shipping, but packing this box for overseas shipment to Texas should have been better than in a case mailer.

Never forget. Today is the day in which shoeshiners everywhere remember what Tommy DeVito did to Billy Batts.

I love how #BALLERINA is just Inigo Montoya's story from THE PRINCESS BRIDE.

My name is Eve Macarro. You killed my father, prepare to die.

Regardless of the type of story, a cinematographer is a director's best friend.

Watching COPYCAT again and it just looks so damn good because of Laszlo Kovacs.

He also did PAPER MOON and GHOSTBUSTERS.

Tak Fujimoto of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS also did FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF.

I don't like to do instant reactions, because in the afterglow your endorphins could trick your sensibilities.

Letting it simmer a few days, I have been looking at @neon-rated.bsky.social #LifeOfChuck with so much zeal for the 23 hours and 56 minutes we have in a day.

And you should too.

If you are around Houston's museum district this weekend come check out @neon-rated.bsky.social #ANORA in 35mm at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Playing tonight with a late afternoon matinee tomorrow.

ANORA recently won five Academy Awards and was named Best Picture by the Houston Film Critics Society.

I'm watching ROGUE NATION for the plot.

GHOST PROTOCOL: Pretty much the template that Cruise and McQ would replicate with the series afterwards.

One of my favorite theater experiences was seeing the Burj Khalifa climb in IMAX.

Cat fight between Paula Patton and Lea Sedoux also great.

Ethan Hunt runs I counted: 6.5
May 4, 2025 at 10:48 PM
M:I III: Starting in medias res was a smooth move, as we get newly minted Oscar winner PSH being intimidating and yelling about the Macguffin (Rabbit's Foot) multiple times.

Story and actual rogue villain is pretty plain, but we do get the introduction of Benji.

Ethan Hunt runs I counted: 7
May 4, 2025 at 2:41 AM
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II feels like John Woo by way of MTV Total Request Live on account of the Limp Bizkit reverb and Hans Zimmer guitar rifts.

Dougray Scott getting his Sean Bean on as the villain.

Biocyte shootout is the best action set piece.

Ethan Hunt runs I counted: 2
May 3, 2025 at 3:50 AM
When you break it down MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE is basically Jim Phelps hates his job, wants a big score, and get a new, younger girlfriend.

Some dated CGI in the train sequence notwithstanding, the original is still in the top tier of the series.

Ethan Hunt runs that I counted: 4

Umbrellas to the left of me, swords to the right.

Time to sing and dance, and thrust and parry.

As the days count down to a new #FinalDestination it is time to go back and see some teenagers become splatter punks.

When you have the director of FIELD OF DREAMS helming, how is there not a marketing tagline of "If you build it, they will hack it"?

SNEAKERS, now on 4K UHD thanks to @kinolorber.com

Prime example of great ensemble casting.

THE ACCOUNTANT 2 had me grinning like a Cheshire cat for most of its running time. It's more laid back than its predecessor, and I found the B story to be the highlight as we have Affleck and Bernthal as brothers commiserating and breaking each other's balls.

Also, their T-shirt game was tight.
