Egypt, pre-Dynastic 4500 to 3650 BC. Ceramic Museum purchase with funds provided by the Oliver Family Foundation 1999.61. Created over 6 thousand years ago, this redware beaker is the oldest object in the museum's collection. The animal it features, a horned quadruped, represents a gazelle or an aoudad, a wild sheep indigenous to North Africa. Ceramic vessels like this, typically found in burials predating Egypt's unification circa 3100 BC, indicate the early stages of Egyptian belief in an afterlife.
