I keep thinking about how a conductor I once had would ask us to play in the first half of the beat, rather than just "on" the beat, to keep us on the tempo rather than slowly falling behind. It's the best way I can describe the tempo here.

There are sound and motion cues, but if you are actively reacting to them, you're too late. It rides a very fine line between the very last second, and anticipating the hit.
