I went and added uBlocker as the other adblocker wasn't stopping the popups after a day. It's good to know about the cache and updating it to keep it up to date against youtube.

If you're on chrome, try adding a youtube specific ad-blocker plugin. That's what's worked for me so far (it's working alongside ad-blocker+), though I can't say for how long it'll work with youtube's BS.
