Economics of air transport in Europe
Challenging assumptions on the economic benefits of air transport growth
bit.ly
November 13, 2025 at 7:00 AM
Expanding airports like Madrid, London Heathrow or Brussels under the assumption that more flights boost growth is outdated & unjustified.

Smarter transport planning should focus on improving rail networks & tourism infrastructure to prioritise low environmental impact and quality over quantity.

In Northern and Western Europe, higher incomes drive air travel, not the other way around.

Many regions are now saturated — extra flights deliver diminishing or even negative economic returns.

Business travel has stagnated, and tourism trips are shorter, reducing economic impact.

A new study from @neweconomics.bsky.social, commissioned by T&E, of 274 regions shows that the assumption that more flights equals more growth isn’t true in most cases.

The ETS carbon price has never been so crucial.

Ending our dependency on fossil fuels would remove a chunk of shipping emissions, but that leaves over 80% of emissions still to be decarbonised.

Efficiency and green H2-based fuels will be needed to get to zero.

EU shipping emissions record high in 2024
EU shipping emissions were the highest since reporting began in 2018, rising by 13% despite a slowdown in global trade, as disruptions in the Red Sea forced ships onto longer routes.

MSC remains the most polluting shipping company in the EU, responsible for 15.6 million tonnes of CO2.

Imports of fossil fuels remain stubbornly high. Fossil fuel carriers continue to make up around 20% of all EU shipping emissions.

November 7, 2025 at 11:25 AM
Container ships were the main drivers of increased emissions – they saw a 46% increase.

This is likely explained by an 18% increase in the average distance sailed and 3% average growth in operational speeds. Each 1% increase in shipping speeds tends to result in 3% growth in emissions.

New T&E analysis of official EU #MRV data shows that disruptions to trade routes in the #RedSea led to longer journeys and increases to sailing speed.

This shows how important it is that emissions are priced by the EU as disruptions can lead to increased emissions from ships.

Taxing excess profits would also give the governments more money to help people with the energy transition, using the revenues from ETS2 to fund things like:
🔌 €150 a month EVs
🚇 Better public transport

Excessive fossil fuel profits should be taxed and given back to citizens
Fossil fuel companies made €180bn in taxable profits in the EU in the two years following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

From 2027, the EU will also price emissions from buildings and road transport, more directly impacting householders with gas, coal, or oil heating and the drivers of petrol and diesel cars.

Oil, gas and energy companies are expected to pass these costs on to consumers.

While this did soften prices for consumers, it also kept demand for oil and gas high, which then filled the pockets of fossil fuel companies.

The EU faces a clear policy choice: either phase out fossil fuel subsidies or impose sustained taxes on excessive profit.

A new analysis on behalf of T&E shows that EU oil and gas companies generated over €104 billion in profits in 2022, a 45% increase from 2021.

In response to higher global energy prices, govs sought to mitigate the impact on residential & industrial consumers through tax reductions & exemptions.
