#Onthisday in 1897, Dr. Thomas Elkins secured a patent for his improved 'refrigerating apparatus', bringing us one step closer to our current household staple. While not the only way of cooling "articles liable to decay", Elkins’ invention was considered an improvement on other existing techniques.

The handwritten notes in the margins often contain vital information for understanding the context of a document, and the private views of the person writing it.

Or at the very least, they tell us which way the bathhouses are!

#OnThisDay in 1897, German chemist Felix Hoffmann performed the first synthesis of a stable compound of acetylsalicylic acid, better known as Aspirin. 

Page 44 of his laboratory journal, held by the Bayer company archives, contains the protocol of the milestone experiment.

This letter, from the holdings of @innertemplelibrary.bsky.social, is one of the few Jane wrote during her short reign.

The Club Andino Bariloche has been promoting mountain sports and activities in Argentina since 1931.

In a joint project with ‪@uniinnsbruck.bsky.social‬, they recently digitised their archive and published everything on Transkribus Sites.

2/3: Álvaro Cuéllar and his colleagues at @uab.cat‬ conducted an experiment with 40 works written by Spanish playwright Lope de Vega and 200 by other hands, to see if they could train neural networks to detect the author of a document just from the handwriting.
