what i find compelling about it is specifically the character study of all these not-evil-but-certainly-not-nice people and how they come into contact for their own goals

black lagoon, like it's always sunny, is generally not asking you to like or even sympathize with many of it's characters. it's an action show but it's also about a bunch of people who are, at their best moments, halfway to decent
