I use the updated version of this pad - it comes with a charging dock and has a switch to toggle digital (Switch style) triggers and full analog triggers. I'm not sure why I still use my Xbox pad, honestly...

Not hating the single player stuff anymore also makes it a lot more fun to engage with the side content - hunting for spray cans, getting challenges done (without just endless Chao Key use), stuff like that. It’s cool!

Definitely controller. It actually plays nicely on a Saturn pad (it's what the game was designed around), but the new update adds proper button glyphs for modern pads and it still plays fine on one

(The Special Stage reqs have been boosted for the first time accessing them though, so my point about it not throwing people in at the deep end still stands)

I remember getting dumped into a Special Stage early on in DRRR, and it was goddamn baffling - it only further soured my opinion on the game, being flung into a completely new mode with barely any driving under my belt
This new requirement makes sense for letting new players get accustomed

Again, playing from a fresh file makes it apparent just how much better the onboarding is now - Special Stages aren’t even accessible now until you’ve at least finished the first row of cups
Some folks have reacted negatively to this, but imo it makes total sense

I do wish a bigger fuss had been made about the patch - dropping it like it’s just another update doesn’t feel like it’s doing it justice. But either way - definitely give it a go, especially if you bounced off RR previously. It might still not gel with you, but it’s definitely a big improvement

If you've never played Ring Racers, or did play it at launch and bounced off it (extremely understandable) make sure to tune in - if you've not seen the 2.4 update, you may be pleasantly surprised!
