Two Latina PIs (#SeattlePacificUniversity &
@uwiscrm.bsky.social) back at the bench for a special collaboration, prepping Illumina libraries for RNA-seq. Dr. Thelma Escobar (@escobarthelma.bsky.social) & I went to college together. Thankful for her help in this project. #ProfessorLife 🧪

Learned a new technique today at the Escobar lab @uwmedicine.bsky.social. RNA quality ✅ was great after tape station analysis. Next week is cDNA library prep before RNA-seq. #professorlife #latina #scientist👩🏻‍🔬 🧪

Super proud of my undergraduate research student who presented at the @aaas.org national scientific meeting. The Delgado lab is currently identifying FDA approved metabolic drugs that can be repurposed as antivirals. #AAASmtg #Delgadolab 🧪

Celebrating my three fabulous undergraduate research students on “International Day of Women and Girls in Science”. It’s been a honor to have them in my research lab and support them as they discover new antiviral therapies! #womeninscience #11Feb 🧪

Life of a virology professor. It is always fascinating to see the physiological changes in cells after they are virus infected. My lab is 1) identifying how gammaherpesviruses (which cause cancer) change host cell metabolism and 2) identifying anti-metabolism drugs that can be used as antivirals. 🧪

It’s that time of year where the super contagious Norovirus is circulating and makes stuff come out both ends. It takes on average 36 hours between exposure to symtoms and usually you are sick 1-2 days. Here is my advice 🧪…👇👇👇 (1/n)

It’s fun to have more time to perform experiments in my lab during my sabbatical.  I come into the lab a couple times a week, and then I just relax when I am home. No lectures to prep, no classes to teach, and no late night grading. A very nice break! 🧪 #professorlife

I am officially on sabbatical though March 2025. No teaching or university service. Looking forward to the time to rest and focus just on my scholarship. I am currently working on identifying clinically relevant anti-metabolism drugs that can be repurposed as antivirals. #professorlife

How does this impact customers financially? All salmon substitutions in sushi restaurants harmed the customer financially as they were given a cheaper market-priced fish. In grocery stores, the average economic loss to customers due to salmon mislabeling was insignificant. (5/n)
December 21, 2024 at 9:12 PM
We then asked the question, how often are customers sold "wild" salmon but it is actually farmed? We found 1 in 3 claimed "wild" salmon samples at sushi restaurants were actually farmed salmon. In grocery stores, however, we found a 0% wild to farmed salmon mislabeling rate. (4/n)

After genetic DNA testing, we found 18% of the combined 119 samples (67 grocery + 52 sushi restaurants) were mislabeled! Individually we found a salmon mislabeling rate of 13.5% in grocery stores and 23.1% in sushi restaurants. (3/n)

We visited and acquired salmon samples from 67 grocery stores and 52 sushi restaurants in Seattle WA. (2/n)
