From a friend: As a retired Park Ranger I beseech you, Please DO NOT volunteer for a job that has been vacated by a recently fired Park Ranger. If visiting a national park site do not be surprised at closed or filthy bathrooms. Those maintenance Rangers were fired. Nobody to answer questions at the visitor center. Those interpretive Rangers were fired. A careless camper starts a spreading fire and there's nobody to put it out. Those firefighter Rangers were fired. The water system is shut down because there's nobody to fix it. Those facility Rangers were fired. The trails are closed because of a rock slide and won't be open all season or indefinitely. Those trail-crew Rangers were fired. You got bit by a squirrel and may have rabies. Those EMT Rangers were fired. Your child is lost or your wife is injured, no Search & Rescue Ranger. You want a hiking permit but there's no backcountry Ranger. You witness a car accident but there's no radio dispatcher to answer the phone. There's also no Law Enforcement as the staff has been reduced. Sorry the park is closed because the fee collecting Rangers were fired. But don't forget it's YOUR National Park!!! Don't sit idle, call your political representatives. They work for us, supposedly. And if you care, SHARE the SHIT out of this information!
