Hah! I hear you -- was looking for a jerrycan SFX a while back, don't remember what I used.

(Not a professional sound designer, but have done the SFX for a couple of audio dramas.) FreeSound is, well, free, and often has what I need. Some of it is Not Great, but you can do quite well starting there.
