Impressive progress for such a young technology. The immediate headache free uses of AI in therapy could be: as assistant for professionals (diagnostic, summarizing, data processing), psychoeducation, or assisting the clients to get the most out of the therapy session. But there potential for more.

I have a local 7B model and its thinking gives the impression of a red herring or, at most, a side hustle. Looks like a parallel story about an anxious highschooler caught off guard and trying to improvise an answer to what the user asked.

Looking ahead, combining AI with VR opens promising possibilities: immersive exposure therapy, virtual spaces for practice, even meeting the famous therapy figures (from Freud to Jeffrey Young). Or just imagine the classic "empty chair" - where the chair no longer needs to be empty.

Why not a third option. AI chatbots could be useful therapy companions - not as replacements, but as tools for reflection between sessions with human therapists. Like a high-tech journal that talks back. True story, btw. Was told AI makes the session with a human much better.
