This spot on the way to Thomas Cole in the Catskills is a great spot to remember how far I’ve come with my hiking, how it felt to not know very much, and the excitement of those times versus the calm I have now.

The things you see off-trail. Remote and steep, Van Wyck rewards hikers with two “bear holes”, two plane wrecks, and a summit ledge to remember.

Hiking is just walking with snacks. And maybe you’ll die. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The summit of Blackhead Mountain in the Catskills. We don’t do summit views, here. Summit views are weaksauce for the weak. Try the Adirondacks. Down here, we’re hikers who love hiking.

Cornell Crack in winter. The best. I love Cornell Mountain so much. Remote and wonderful, it’s a joy to hike and, while the summit is a dud, there are astonishing scenic views if you know where to look.

Snowfall turns Balsam Lake into a glittering winter wonderland. But the fire tower’s incredible 360° views make this hike spectacular at any time of year.

🥾 Hike Length: 7.5 miles (12.07 km)

🏔️ Total Ascent: 1,546ft (471m)

Wittenberg & Cornell from Woodland Valley is an extremely rewarding hike that includes one of the Catskills’ grandest vistas, the infamous Cornell Crack, and breathtaking views of Slide, Giant Ledge & Panther.

These three besties finished their Catskill 3500 challenge together on Kaaterskill High Peak yesterday. Lovely crew to hike with, and there were even some proud parents along for the ride. Congrats to Liz, Gabby, and Sarah!

It takes a little longer to get to the Devil’s Path in winter but you do get to pass this gorgeous red barn on the western end of Platte Clove Road.

Snowy summit of Halcott Mountain at sunset. Crazy beautiful up there when the light is just right.

I asked ChatGPT, “Based on what you know about me by now, draw a picture of what you think my current life looks like,” and I got this back. Perfect. 10/10. No notes.

One of the best views in the Catskills: Palenville Overlook has epic angles on Kaaterskill High Peak, Round Top, and Route 23A far below. Then, to the east, the wide Hudson Valley floor connecting with the ancient Taconic Mountains. (Amazing spot for sunrise, too.)

Views from the summit of Cascade Mountain in the Adirondacks. This entry-level Adirondack High Peak hike is a great introduction to the rigors of mountain hiking: rough trails, rocky scrambles and incredible views make this short day-hike super rewarding.

The fire began on Whitehouse Road on the western slope of Bangle Hill. Multiple reports online say it burned on Samson Mountain but, from what I have seen, those reports are incorrect. The fire appears to have burned on Bangle Hill only.

The spring on Hunter Mountain’s horse trail was dry at the weekend. I’ve never seen it dry before. Usually a gusher. 😬
