You’ve already been linked Peter-Pike’s excellent SH Tricks paper, but I’ll also add grahamhazel.com/blog/spheric... and torust.me/Thesis.pdf#p... from my own thesis. What made SH click for me was deriving least-squares over the sphere and seeing that you get SH if you require orthonormality.
