He’s parked himself by my suitcase thinking I’m leaving on a business trip. Instead we’re heading for the woods to hike all weekend.

The show is great. I went twice. His Monk by the Sea blew me away. Photos don’t do it justice; that’s my measure of a masterpiece.

If you’re in New York City and an art fan, the current Caspar David Friedrich show at the @metmuseum.org is worth a look. He’s a stunning landscape artist. His brown ink wash landscapes with their gradient ambient light are unique. Call me a romantic.

My rescue dog Lex. One time a kid randomly punched him on the street and he looked up at me to ask what was wrong with the kid. “The parents” I said, as we kept on walking.

I burned out after looking at the Duccios and Simone Martinis, they’re devotionally and visually intense. I skimmed the rest of the show but will be back. Come see it if you’re in NYC over the holidays. I leave you with a video of a chalice that had me thinking of Karl Marx.

After the Duccio I wasn’t prepared for this Simone Martini masterpiece, it startled me. It had me thinking of Matisse/Fauvism at first, before I relaxed and could access it. This work repays the time spent viewing it. Photos never do justice to masterpieces, that’s how you know they’re masterpieces

Then we’re on to Duccio where you see an innovative synthesis of Gothic and Byzantine traditions that introduces a new suppleness and volume.

When the crucifix blew apart they found devotional notes from the artist inside it, saying it was a true image of Christ.
