Land of the Lustrous Volume 13

As endings go this was a powerful one even if I won't be able to fully work through my feelings towards this series in a short amount of time. It's a very muddy + personal story.

Phos goes through such a journey and Pebble is a sleeper hit for me. I cried.

Hello Melancholic

Wanted to have something fairly short and light to contrast with some of the bleaker stories I've been experiencing recently and this was a great palette cleanser.

Minato's anxiety is really well protrayed, and in general i like how this story approaches relationships

Rocky II

I looove how personal Apollo Creed's beef was this time round. "I won but I didn't beat him!" is a hell of a quote.

I also got to do the cool artist thing of having a sticky note on part of my piece!

I started by working into the knee area then building out from that!

Next week is the final week of the course and will be one long pose.

Turns out sticky notes are very good for quick little test sketches to work out a composition

More life drawing!

This week was all about negative space. The exercise was all about finding negative space around the model.

I used this technique of breaking some curves into straight lines.

Whilst it definitely helped me understand forms easier it makes figures feel far less organic

Since I forgot to show my work last week it's time for 2 life drawing threads!

Last week was all about unusual shapes and thinking about centre of gravity

Genuinely! Whoever boarded and animated this scene in particular deserves some massive credit since it was a MASTERCLASS in subverting what is expected to happen.

Christmas Karma

Has its heart in the right place and taught me some new stuff about Ugandan history which is pretty neat.

Otr is still a really swingy series in terms of quality. Kawaguchi is DEFINITELY getting more comfortable with action sequences this chapter.

But I cannot help but worry for the series' longevity with its current pacing.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Hell of an intro to Spielburg's filmography. Wonderful wonderful action film.

For action sequences I asked one of the Digital Circus storyboarders how they worked and they said they try to keep action more straightforward

And yeah you can see that in effect here. Lots of clear, characterful movements which don't confuse the eye

Been doing some studies/notes and I think I'll aim to cover 3 sequences which each emphasise different processes/intents when boarding

Also I'm struck by just HOW expressive the Digital Circus cast are

Hilda Season 1

What a whimsical world. Hilda is such an adventurous little hero and I love how this show looks.

Also the humour around the paperwork obssessed Elves and the chilled out Woodsman are great.

Monkey King (2023)

A real fun time! No clue why letterboxd folks seem to think this is the worst kids film ever.

Garfield 2: A Tail of Two Kitties

This movie has a lasagna making montage to Black Eyed Peas' Pump It. How can you not love it?
