TL;DR: The new U.S. tariff rate against our two largest trading partners is either 10%, 25% or 35%, and so far no one I've reached out to at the White House is able to tell me which.
So the White House says the 10% baseline tariff also applies to Canada & Mexico. It has not said whether that's the effective new rate itself; whether it adds to the 25% fentanyl tariff, making the new rate 35%; or whether it kicks in only if the fentanyl tariff falls away

Really appreciate this clear 2024 YR4 asteroid analysis and its “don’t panic but pay attention” message.
The chance of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting out planet in 2032 is now 1.5%, or 1 in 67.

The OVERWHELMING likelihood is that the asteroid will miss Earth.

But for the first time ever, we might have to seriously consider a deflection mission soon.

Let me explain. 🧵 (1/x)

Canada’s 30-day reprieve from U.S. tariffs gives us valuable time to diversify our trading relationships and work out how to protect our sovereignty from a belligerent, erratic, cruel neighbour. Still not buying American. #ViveLeCanada 🇨🇦

Fascinating - from the article: "Those first modern humans that had interbred with Neanderthals and lived alongside them died out completely in Europe 40,000 years ago ... It was the ancestors of these early international pioneers who eventually returned to Europe to populate it."
This story from BBC on the new Ranis/Zlatý kůň genetic work has a great first sentence that captures the importance:

“Far from triumphantly breezing out of Africa, modern humans went extinct many times before going on to populate the world, new studies have revealed.”

Humans may not have survived without Neanderthals
A new DNA analysis has shown that the arrival of modern humans from Africa was far from smooth.

I was in my first year of university in Montreal when this happened. After that day, I mapped exits and shelters everywhere I went on campus. I still do it. Today and always, I remember every one of these women, killed simply because they were women.
Today is the 35th anniversary of the murder of 14 female students at Polytechnique Montreal.

Every December 6th in Canada we remember them and reflect on violence against women.

This study appears to suggest that people like AI-generated poetry better than human-authored poetry - and that, largely because they like it better, they think AI-generated poetry is actually human-authored poetry. We're primed to be fooled. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
