I think we should call 'em rosefinches, because they've been around longer than houses, and calling them house finches seems disrespectful

All House finches are American Rosefinches, some American Rosefinches are not House finches, but most are.

It's not incorrect to call a House Finch a Rosefinch, and not the least bit confusing in most situations ;-)
