For the past 50 years y'all voted for this bed, now you get to lie in it.

Politics is about compromise. If you want to know who's really to blame for this shutdown, you can thank Pat Buchanan, Newt Gingrich, the Tea Party, and basically every politician who turned American politics into "total victory, no compromise" approach that represents today's Republican party.

So the real question is: why would anyone expect a party to vote against its platform? If the situation was reversed I certainly wouldn't expect the Republicans to vote for it. The Democrat party represents (more than) half of the electorate - it's their JOB not to vote for this budget!

The current budget, which the Republicans forced through with no compromises, cuts money to programs for poor people, children, minorities, the disenfranchised, the middle class, and average Americans. In other words, the current budget goes entirely against the principles of the Democrat platform.

Passing the budget and keeping the government open would have entailed voting to keep funding exactly as it is now.
