I got back to playing with languages for a bit, but the chaos after this became too much to handle 😅

Summary “Luffy hates being alone, but he understood when his peers asked him to wait until they were ready for the journey.” A semi-realistic, comedic, hopeful twist on what the Straw Hats would dream of in a modern world, and how they would fight for it. Luffy feels Sanji freeze. The tension has shifted. The goth girl raises an eyebrow, faking her pout again. There’s something electric in the air that Luffy feeds on as much as he feeds on food: a sense of closeness, an impression that things are in the right place, comfort all around. “Home is with the people who care when you’re gone”, they said in one of the games he played some time ago. 「なんだお前か。」 « Ah, c’est toi. » They’re looking straight into each other eyes, teeth grinding. Luffy snickers again at the “Oh, it’s you.” they’ve just uttered in their mother tongue, like they haven’t missed each other as much as Luffy missed them both. Zoro frowns, Sanji frowns harder. 「戦う気かラブコック⁈」 « Quoi ?! Tu veux te battre, tête de cactus ?! » The answer to “You wanna fight – insert insult –?!” is always yes, and Luffy gets confirmation about how it’s normal for people to hear emotions, considering these two are not even speaking the same language anymore but know very well what the other means. One second later, they’re rolling on the ground, Zoro trying to skillfully strangle Sanji with his arms while Sanji does the same with his legs. All languages have left them at the same time, and they’re grunting instead like animals. The goth girl sighs, but she seems rather amused. “Children. Literal children. I don’t know what I should’ve expected, I heard this imbecile complain about this cook guy for as long as I’ve known him.” Luffy has already opened the cookie bag and is munching on them delightfully. “Of course. They’re angry besties."

Guilt gnaws at him: Sanji has always rejected the affection of men, but it’s no reason to have left him to fend for himself, when the cook has spent all this time groveling at women’s feet to pick up the crumbs of recognition they deign to throw his way. Maybe he should have insisted?
