I was a line manager, then a director of engineering and after the 2023 layoff, I did feel burnout. My wife and I decided to take a 2 year sabbatical together since we had the savings.

I have been contributing to open source, doing tutoring for computer science. It's been very good for my soul.

When EMs had smaller teams: they were in the details, often involved w most PRs/ code reviews. With large teams it’s not feasible. Automation has its downsides but the alternative of flying blind due to not enough time: even worse
