Today, after 498 days of captivity, Ruth Chimiel's son, Iair Horn, was released alongside Sagui Dekel-Chen and Sasha Troufanov. I had the honor of interviewing Ruth in her home in Israel, for a documentary film I directed. Her strength, resilience, and optimism profoundly impacted our entire crew.

“The immigrant story is one of total triumph. They don't come here to beg or steal. They work hard. The Europeans worked hard, the Asians worked hard, everybody that comes here works hard. There's no free ride in the United States.” – Edward James Immigrant Archive Project testimony.

"I remember my last Christmas in Cuba. It was a very sad time. I don't recall any sense of celebration or optimism. I just remember a very deep sadness. We left for the United States shortly afterwards and I didn't know what to expect.

"I think brought up in an immigrant household, one of the things that was so interesting about it was that this story, the African-American story, is not my parents story. And they were not attached. I think in terms of music, they never said this is white music and this is black music.

"For me, those early days the U.S. were a tremendous cultural and psychological shock. Being separated from my father, we didn't know what would happen to him, and we were very scared. They placed us in a two-bedroom, one-bathroom house with another family named the Fíallos.
