I'm not intending to be provocatuve but my timeline is full of outrage and hand-wringing. What's missing from people's critiques, such as they are, is a solution - and no one wants responsibility for the difficult decisions.

So, someone brought here as a baby and is effectively British in their outlook is returned to where their parents came from? Kicking the can down the road doesn't seem any less cruel.

Framed like that you're right but it doesn't answer the question: what's the point of and where's the fairness in an asylum system which has no consequences when you don't get leave to remain?

For 18 months around 2000, I was editor in chief of 21 paid & free titles employing 80+ journalists operating out of six districts (one home to head office, comps & ad reps). Now 2 titles left, no offices and no journos. Multiply that across every town in the country.
