I always do 'take away' for these problems because that's how I've always hit these type of problems ... I never think about using 'difference'. I see the comments here about using 'difference' and I have got to start using that method that makes the math so much easier!

I guessed 6! 5 races to whittled the group down to one string of 5 top runners, then a final to pick out the first 3 across the line. Your method is much better as it takes into account the spread and random distribution of the real 3 top racing rats.
