This past year, I have been reading gobs of novels and short story collections published by small presses. I nominated three for inclusion in 100 Notable Small Press Books of 2025. If you shared your novel with me, thanks! I enjoyed reading all of them.

First bean pod of the year! I forget what I planted where. This is either black bean or red.

I have been tending to my garden every day. Sunlight is so good for the mood!

Baby bunny loose in the suburbs wandered onto our lawn today. The owner says the bunny *wants* to roam free. So this was not an escape or a mistake or an accident. I am so upset. (Also, I am very allergic to bunnies.) We are in the process of finding a home for this cutie…

Peaceful protest in my red state - red town - red city. 1500 turned out (and as many cicadas).

Some interesting research today… I need to decide on the medicinal plants my character might use in the early 1900s to help another character recover after indulging in opioids and alcohol.

This book is great. I have online resources too.

Are you all reading this? The Sleeping Land by Ella Alexander. Fantastic writing and storytelling. Very surprising. Wonderfully complex characterization of a dysfunctional group of coworkers. Recommend 100%.

Also, readable font. Thank you, Unnamed Press, for not hurting my eyes.

I am reading Amanda Peters’ short story collection, Waiting for the Long Night Moon. Heartbreaking and just perfectly done. Huge fan of her work. Recommend 100%.

I started reading The Mesmerist by Caroline Woods this week. Engaging, well written historical fiction set in 1894 Minneapolis. Someone is attacking the women. Recommend.

I started a good book last night. Pearl by Sian Hughes. (I tried and failed to add the accent on the A.) Three chapters in, and I am certain this will be among my favorites.

Starting a new book today. House of Cotton by Monica Brashears. 20 minutes in on the audiobook, and I am sold. Great example of character/voice-driven fiction.

I am way behind schedule on my TBR. Finishing the digital ARC of The Incorrigibles by Meredith Jaeger. Dual timeline historical fiction. Loving the timeline in the women’s section of San Quentin in the late 1800s.

It is time to figure out how to kill a particular character with precision. So many options! I am starting with The Grim Reader by Miffie Seideman.

I finished my writing work for the day. Rewarding myself now with a few hours reading Ron Rash's The Caretaker. Great example of 3rd person with multiple POV characters done seamlessly. Gorgeous writing. Big tension. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

If you see this, post a book you've read more than once.

The Birds of Opulence by Crystal Wilkinson.

I just started reading The Safety of Small Things: Poems by Jane Hicks.
It’s lovely and accessible and heartbreaking. Recommend.

So I looked up Nietzsche to make sure I didn't misspell his name. Look at that mustache! I've been researching Victorian-era mustaches, and this is a really nice example of what was in style. I'm for sure going to slap this mustache on one of my side-characters.

We did a tour of Music Hall in Cincinnati today. A research trip for my novel. I had questions about how it looked when it was first built in the late 1800s. I collected gobs of info. Our tour guide was fantastic. (Ceiling of the main hall in the picture. Fancy.)
