kinda like other high speed trains in my experience😊

I'd love it if someone goes more in depth into the "ugly" side of urbanism/transit orientation. Namely that it actually does require money to run systems. So why, despite requiring more tax money than car infrastructure in the long term, it is still a good idea.

if it's an accident, it warrants a review to see how to prevent it next time.

That's what's happening on railways, not on streets. It's part of why railways are so much safer than streets :/

we don't let our cat outthe door anymore because our previous cat ended his life being run over by a car. but that's "a normal accident, nothing one can do about it".

despite roads being plenty expensive as well, total costs per traveled distance is, in most cases, higher for transit, mostly because of the labour it costs. I think it is worth the cost, but it's a cost nonetheless.

I agree and I'm with you on most things. I also am a big supporter of transit, I don't own a car etc.

However within the urbanism scene I feel there is a general dishonesty about the costs of things. I'm saying general on purpose, this is nothing personal :)

that's not really an answer though, is it? 😉
January 13, 2026 at 6:28 PM
is it really going to pay back its cost? Most transit systems do not make money, the only exceptions I know are in the world's densest cities.

completely agree, but 2.4% faster busses is surprisingly low IMHO

same here. interesting experience but can't wait for it to be over haha

ik herinner me, ook in de winter, een helemaal dood maar supercuarkant dorpje op een heuvel. toevallig een restaurant open, de meest geweldige mozzarella gegeten met een panoramisch uitzicht op de etna. Was geweldig. Sicilië is fantastisch. veel plezier nog!

good luck with your recovery!

I was also surprised that even the space at the immediate front entrance of my local hospital, is not properly flat. it's doable to traverse with a wheelchair, but if even there no additional thought to make things easier was deemed necessary...

temporarily wheelchsir bound due to a broken ankle. It is truly eye opening.

building the tram turned out to be very expensive. the question is, was that really transit investment or actually car enabling investment, as said tram wouldn't be necessary with a better choice of location for the hospital?
January 1, 2026 at 6:53 PM
sounds like Utrecht. Famous as the city is, it built its hospital/university between the cows outside the city proper, oreumsbaly for rural accessibility (cars!). Years later it built a tram line to there, but it didn't operate during the weekends!

all the best and strength regardless of how things turn out.

A couple of extra transit lines won't make a significant difference, but if you want significant change then the bill wíll also be significant. Economies of scale notwithstanding.

excellent podcast and great discussion.

The one thing I find that many urbanists (myself included) don't seem to (want to) consider is the cost of transit. Sure, profit might not be a requirement, but also surely, we want to keep the amount of tax we pay in control?

blue en yellow? is that even legal outside the Netherlands? 😜

do we know how much exhaust emission equal the risks of cigarette smoke?
December 27, 2025 at 10:31 AM
This is an extreme comparison but I sometimes feel I live in the world where most of my peers are addicted to cocaïne, keep telling me I should use cocaïne too because it's so practical, and keep telling me I'm exaggerating the downsides of cocaïne when I explain I don't really want to.
December 27, 2025 at 8:33 AM
The thing that amazes me, is how normal it is now for people to not accept smoking in public due to the safety of others. When I ask for a street where there is no risk of being run over in a deadly way, the usual feedback is that accidents are unlikely and nothing one can do about those...
