I do think this is Gaga trying to emulate her old pop persona through a contemporary filter. And I applaud her for trying to stay on top of musical trends (and mostly succeeding), rather than riding a wave that's so close to crashing (*hum*... Chromatica.)

I find there's hardly any build-up. Just choirs, everywhere, at all times, endlessly drowning Gaga's vocals. In general, the prod on Mayhem doesn't seem to be crafted to accompany the songs but rather the oppos. Which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if it was interesting or exciting by itself.
