Former philosophy professor and attorney, nascent historian and writer on Tudor intellectual history.

Chapel Hill, Oxford, Charlottesville, God only knows where next. Would very much like to live in a P. G. Wodehouse novel if that can be arranged.
This photo, from President Carter’s funeral, says it all.

The garrison sleeps in the citadel
With the ghosts and the ancient stones
High on the parapet
A Scottish piper stands alone
And high on the wind
The highland drums begin to roll
And something from the past just comes
And stares into my soul

Reading Wodehouse’s school stories. An absolute hoot, not least for the chance to see him trying out various tropes and turns of phrase that would become memorable in the Blandings and Jeeves & Wooster tales. #TalesofStAustins

In 2020, just before the pandemic, I was lucky enough to attend a performance of Le Nozze di Figaro in Prague’s Estates Theatre, where Mozart premiered Don Giovanni in 1787. The sound was spectacular, as it was for Mozart, and as is Prague itself.

It is hardly a wonder that Mozart loved the city.

The four varieties of cherry tomatoes I planted seems kind of reasonable. But eleven varieties of hot pepper may call for an intervention ….
