in-carnate i envy your cane the whiteknuckle support of your good leg a boost so that it may overcome the bad one you crumple without it trip and fall, your potential scattered before you on the floor and they rush to your side: strangers, friends, lovers, the like “where is his cane? he should have his cane!” “it is a piece of him, after all.” it makes sense. you’re missing something. something that should work, but doesn’t, should be there, but isn’t, should burn, but flickered out some years ago, so quietly and without warning that you never saw it happen. everyone knows it. they understand. they can see what you’ve lost, see the ghost of your competence in the way your pulse echoes through its handle, how its wood grows between your fingertips. it is as much a part of you as your leg ever was. i envy your cane. i would fashion one for myself but, i don’t know the shape of what it is i’ve lost.
