The rise, fall and rise of UK nuclear power

The green light given to Sizewell C and other small modular reactors somewhat revives the UK’s nuclear capacity after decades of decline, albeit at a lower peak than the 1990s

Extreme weather is destroying crops around the world, from hurricanes hitting bananas and yams in Jamaica, to drought ruining maize crops in Myanmar last year.

We mapped a global snapshot of the impacts from media reports for @carbonbrief.org

A forest twice the size of Greater London would need to be planted in the UK to cancel out the extra emissions from the expansion of Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports.

That's more than 300,000 hectares...

A network of researchers conducted a global stocktake of measures taken by communities forced to adapt to climate change.

We analysed 1,600+ peer-reviewed articles from the data looking at where, how and by whom these measures are being taken.

This ridgeline plot and the unconventional use of shading from white to blue to indicate sea ice loss is great. It also reinforces the impression of a dense ice pack breaking up.

We also designed a series of grouped dot charts/grid plots (or waffle charts, as they're named in the #svelte project) breaking down the data at country level, with a focus on China and the US, but every country has a dedicated page

Each study in the dataset is represented by a 'card', noting the study title and brief summary. We designed a 'stamp' for quick reference to show the influence of climate change and the type of weather event.

The cards can be filtered or searched by region, country, weather event, etc.

The other reason to cluster the data by region is due to the range of geographic scales of the study areas - some are very specific whilst others are national, continental or even global.

We present the data per region in a popup with a globe locator indicating the area the data is filtered to

We've just launched a major update of our attribution map, tracking every published study on how climate change has influenced extreme weather.

With over 600 studies, we opted to cluster the data into regions, moving away from previous overcrowded versions plotting each study with a single marker

The UK’s last coal-fired power plant closes this month.

Whilst significant, this is worth holding in mind:

"Since 1882, the UK’s coal plants will have emitted 10.4bn tonnes of CO2 – more than most countries have ever produced from all sources"
