The @faznet.bsky.social has discerned a strain of unhappiness among German Christians over gay marriage that I confess has so far eluded me.

Another poll puts AfD within sneezing grasp of a majority in Saxony-Anhalt (election next Sept). Perversely, some in the CDU suspect they will find an AfD majority easier to handle than the party just falling short. That could see the AfD seek to tempt CDU waverers, potentially splitting their party

The AfD qualified for three mayoral run-offs in cities in North Rhine-Westphalia today, and lost all by big margins. The lesson is not that we have overdone the AfD's rise, but that we do perhaps sometimes underestimate the counter-mobilisation effects - including in east Germany, incidentally.

This new poll suggests the state of Saxony-Anhalt (pop 2m) could deliver Germany a political earthquake at its election next year.

At 39%, forming a govt without the AfD will be near-impossible. And these numbers will intensify tensions inside the state CDU over maintaining the anti-AfD firewall.

Sentences that would have had you sectioned if you'd uttered them five years ago: two-thirds of Germans, including 46% of AfD and 41% of Die Linke voters, agree that the defence budget should increase to 5% of GDP.

If Mitteleuropa offers any old-world charm greater than chowing down on pork shoulder and slurping a sparkling Apfelschorle while riding the Knödelexpress along the Elbe, I don't want to know about it

I'm sceptical of "80% of Germans voted against the AfD" cope.

- AfD doubled its tally and will be loudest opposition voice
- It lifted its vote by 22% in Saxony and 18% in Thuringia relative to Sept state elex
- it is completely dominant in the east. Hard to see firewall surviving in current form
