The administration is saying they can do this because they "fired" most of the existing USIP board, and the remaining board picked new leadership.
But the law is crystal clear (www.usip.org/sites/defaul...) that the president can fire USIP board members only under the following circumstances: 2/

Since our current representative remains AWOL, I'll be doing a town hall this Thursday evening in Summit.
Whether you agree with my perspective or not, please come to share concerns and ideas about what can be done to get our country to a better place.
See the image to RSVP!

To my friends in Congress (on both sides of the isle):
Take a moment to be angry about this statement that Trump seems to have plagiarized from Putin.
Then remember you have power and do something.
Here are some options. 1/

Many charities and humanitarian aid groups will be tempted to ask for special life-saving exceptions to Musk's funding freezes, instead of suing to end them altogether.
They should consider what Hannah Arendt wrote about those who asked the Nazis to exempt specific Jewish victims from persecution.

Really weird line in one of yesterday's executive orders that sounds like something from a Xi Jinping speech, with its charge that America's global policies threaten"harmonious relations" (a phrase only the Chinese government uses) and its awkward English.
Wonder how it got there?

This was Biden's deal, but as much as I hate to say it, he couldn't have done it without Trump -- not so much because of Trump's performative threats to Hamas, but because of his willingness to tell Bibi bluntly, behind the scenes, that the war had to end by Jan. 20.
And that's damning. 1/

I'm thinking about this because on January 1st, Medicare's $2000 annual cap on out of pocket drug costs for seniors - which we passed in the Inflation Reduction Act - finally kicked in.
It will save the retired firefighter I met around $3,000 a year. 3/

Most seniors on Medicare don't have out of pocket costs quite that high, but in my time in Congress I heard from many who did, for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and many others. For them, the burden could be crushing. 2/

I felt a sense of utter horror.
But I also remember feeling that this evidence of industrial scale murder would be a turning point for the US (as the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia had been 20 years before). Surely, our leadership would now be moved to act to stop the slaughter.

But stop disparaging the people who deliver the thousands of public services we take for granted. And don't pretend they can be replaced by political loyalists like the one pictured below (who'd have no clue how to do these jobs) or by tech bros and their apps. I hope we don't learn this hard way.

Every agency I've mentioned makes mistakes, has inefficiencies, & hires some duds as well as stars. If you think we should cut their budgets more (spending on these "discretionary" domestic programs has steadily declined in recent decades), fine - make that case. 10/

In New Jersey, my home and car get about 42% of their power from clean nuclear energy.
I'm confident our reactors won't blow up or melt down in part because they're monitored by shadowy "Deep State" inspectors from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. 6/

Just a couple of days after Ida hit us, "Deep State" operatives from FEMA visited my neighbors and me to assess our needs. They got us immediate and long term funds that helped cover our losses and pay for repairs. 4/

To get to the farm, I drive over this bridge. It was washed out during Hurricane Ida, and fixed with funds passed to NJ by "Deep State" agents at the Federal Highway Administration.
BTW, the bridge was built by the original "Deep State," FDR's Works Progress Administration. 3/

Last week, I got some wonderful local produce at Lima Farms, near my Hunterdon County home.
The owner, John Lima (a friend), recently got a grant to help process his naturally raised meats from the folks at USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service.

Keith Kellogg, Trump's Ukraine envoy, is a surprisingly solid pick who has outlined principled terms for ending the war (see below).
The question is what does Trump do when Putin rejects these terms? Double down on helping Ukraine, or force the weaker party to submit in a peace-at-any-cost move?

When China retaliated against US agricultural exports after Trump's 2018 tariffs, we spent $28 billion bailing out our farmers. That was manageable. Bit it was a fight over some products with one country; imagine the cost of a fight over all products with all countries. 5/
