A happy 219th birthday to Mexico's Benito Juárez! If you'd like to learn more about the international political thought of the Benemérito and his Liberal coalition in the tumultous 1860s, please take at look at our recent piece in the @apsrjournal.bsky.social:

Really, I'd have thought there were bigger stories in UK higher education at the moment...but it's good to see the BBC bringing the hardest-hitting university news.

On Tues, 21 Jan, I'll be chairing a reading group at the Warwick Global History and Culture Centre on Lauren Benton's new book, "They Called It Peace: Worlds of Imperial Violence." How did "small wars" and violence at imperial frontiers shape global legal orders?

As much as any US president, Carter strove to overcome the US "hegemonic presumption" in Latin America. That's not to whitewash a complicated presidency. But in a week when the incoming US president has threatened Panama and demanded the return of the Canal, the difference could hardly be sharper.

Farewell to Jimmy Carter, who strove to use power in the service of principle and public good to an extent uncommon among world leaders.
I studied under Carter's NSC director for Latin America, protege, and friend Bob Pastor. I got to meet the former president briefly on a couple of occasions.

To close the year, I'd like to share some of my publications from 2024. If I could give any advice, it would be this: find yourself such fantastic co-authors and co-editors, and this line of work can be a real joy. Happy holidays and best wishes for 2025!

Today! It's a pleasure to be in Williamsburg, at the William & Mary Global Research Institute. This afternoon, I'll be speaking about Republican Internationalism: Latin America and the Making of the Modern International Order.

Where did today's international order originate? Accounts normally focus on Europe; in doing so, they miss an important part of the story–Latin America.
Join me today at the Westminster Forum, for this talk kindly hosted by the Centre for the Study of Democracy!

Mexico's López Obrador is oft maligned as internationally ignorant–even isolationist.
In @foreignpolicy.com, Carsten-Andreas Schulz and I argue that AMLO's legacy is better understood as an attempt to revive the republican internationalism of his hero Benito Juárez.
