Presenting what might be my new favorite photo sequence on Wikipedia, on the feeding habits of the mallard duck (click to expand, I don't think the whole thing will display by default):

Out helping with FAST Planning’s annual bike/pedestrian count, with Bella serving as my trusty assistant. She is very attentive because she imagines all people have treats. So far none have had treats.

- Tanana Lakes, just south of town, has a pretty decent swim beach area (also trails for walking and biking)
- Hit up a friend and borrow a canoe to paddle through town on the Chena

Outside remains undefeated. Beats inside 10 times out of 10. Touched some grass. Daydreamed about canoeing. #fbxgov

FAIRBANKS BOROUGH BUDGET LIVE THREAD:

We’re a few minutes from getting underway in Fairbanks. No public testimony at this meeting, just Assembly debate and votes on the budget. But members of the public are allowed to watch, and some Mary Siah advocates brought signs. #fbxgov

Chena River ice just let go downstream of the Barnette bridge - still holding above there. Won’t be long now, though.

Oh hey, I just did Upper Angel Creek a week ago; it was gorgeous!

It’s hard to imagine ways in which it’s possible to own yourself harder than this.

UAF XC skiers just threw it down today in the 10K skate races. On the men’s side, Ben Dohlby won, and on the women’s, Kendall Kramer dominated the field and Tabitha Williams got third! Victories in both races and two of three podium spots for UAF in the women’s race. So impressive. 💙 💛 💪🏼

New XC sprint course at UAF is fun as hell. Can there be races here a dozen times per season, please? 🔥 💙 💛

Remember a week or two ago when I questioned the wisdom of the Iditarod’s desperate devotion to the Willow restart when the conditions are so clearly unfit for a good race (and the welfare of dogs and mushers)?

This is what the Farewell Burn is looking like with two weeks to race start.

Sure, sorry - I didn’t mean to put you on the spot, just confused why the ITC always fights Fairbanks restarts, to the point that they give their detractors images like this and headlines like “Injured Buser 'worried sick' about less-experienced Iditarod racers on rough trail.”

Also, I am very confused by the assertion that the K300 is on the coast 🤔

Also on my office wall, this masterpiece:

That picture is literally on my (beige) office wall. And the bridge in it is still in use near Nome, which might be my favorite example of Alaska repurposing outside of the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

It’s “a last frontier” and has always been “a last frontier.”

Exhibit A: The gym wall at my elementary school, where it was painted in 1983 or so and I learned it in 1989.

Steve Brown and the Bailers at the Golden Eagle is Fairbanks (and Ester!) in a bottle. What a great show last night.

This was Wednesday at 2:48 p.m. - 20 below or so in Fairbanks, in case you were curious how that looks.

Beautiful and cold (but honestly, not that cold for Fairbanks)
