Trying to stay focused on higher ed, but someone always seems to be wrong on the internet.
I fully agree: our democracy is at risk, and the normal processes of deal-making have become obsolete and dangerous. Elected officials wedded to the old ways need to step aside. Hope you’re correct about Spanberger.

Revisiting this take, and I’m not sure whether it was right or not. Did Schumer try to head off the surrender and fail, or did he side with surrender caucus after Rs rejected his compromise?

There are other reasons to be mad at Jeffries, but today he’s a victim not a perp.

As a south Jersey constituent, I thank you for your principled stand.

- Mr Penn? I have Secretary Edwards on line 1 and Russ Vought on line 2. Which one do you want to take first?
- oh god. Tell them…tell them I’m writing a very important letter and I can’t be disturbed.

I like to think Penn woke up from a two-day bender and shrieked, “oh god, what have I done?”
a man in a white shirt is standing in a room looking at the camera .
Alt: Patrick Penn puts on his glasses, struggling to remember what happened on Friday. Did he do anything unwise? Then the phone rings and it’s Russ Vought.

To be clear, USDA deputy Undersecretary Patrick Penn - the author of this angry memo - personally authorized the states to provide full benefits only two days ago.

If USDA is going to punish states for providing full benefits to SNAP recipients, it will have to explain this Friday memo from the FNS director instructing states to do exactly that. www.fns.usda.gov/snap/updated...

Good summary from @crampell.bsky.social.
For those confused by state of play on SNAP right now: You're not alone
Yesterday, *before* SCOTUS paused order telling Trump admin to send out SNAP $$, a handful of states rushed to issue full SNAP benefits to at least part of their caseload.
This includes CA, OR, WA, MI, and WI—all blue states (🧵)

The best critique of Schumer‘s judgment in the spring is not that he was wrong in his judgment to surrender. It’s that he allowed Republicans to force the Democratic caucus to surrender by not articulating a clear demand weeks in advance of the vote. That’s a mistake he corrected this time.

I suspect this also served to keep the lame-duck senators on-side so they wouldn’t cut a side deal with Thune. Those negotiations froze after the election, but reports seem to indicate they were very close to agreement on settling for a Senate vote.
