Indeed, I conflated the two, so I went back to calculate gross profits for both. I think I've done it in a way that is a more direct apples-to-apples comparison. Still a significant gap:

Tesco meanwhile, reported gross profit of 7.2% in the year to February 22 2025: www.tescoplc.com/investors/re...
So, taking like-for-like gross profits, Canadian grocery stores are still massively more profitable than UK comparators:
Loblaws: 30.9%
Empire: 27.6%
Tesco: 7.2%
Sainsbury's: 6.76%
So, taking like-for-like gross profits, Canadian grocery stores are still massively more profitable than UK comparators:
