You're so right about the 'art' in his writing too -- super visual, and the language of the place so dense and baroque. And his names are so good, like tiny cameo portraits in themselves. So strange and crumbly and vivid, all of it.

Oh man, I love love love this book, and Gormenghast. Wild to think this could have been THE blueprint for what fantasy looked like if JRR hadn't had the stranglehold (and broader appeal/clear moral arcs/actual magic etc etc).
