I don't know if "vague talk about democracy" is a winner on the campaign trail, but it's a centrally important message that needs to be repeated. If only to nudge media outlets into framing the upcoming election as the dramatic choice that it is.

People aren't freaking out nearly enough about the plausible end of American democracy.
robert kagan is…not great, but the overall thrust of this essay — that there is a pretty clear path to outright autocracy — is basically right. and i continue to think that trump’s great advantage is the entrenched american belief that “it can’t happen here.”
