I’ve just noticed that my Substack post for Remembrance Day got fewer ‘opens’ than usual. Perhaps I should have made a point of mentioning that it includes a 3,500 word historical short story, ‘After the battle’.

Like all my posts, it’s free.

It was a warm but grey afternoon yesterday, so no pretty sunset to show after our nine mile skate round London. You’ll just have to put up with a picture of a bunch of skaters.

‘After the Battle’ is a free short story on my Substack this week.

Another photo from last weekend, in case you need more reasons to check my Halloween post. And there's a free novella to pick up while you're there.

This week's Substack will be slightly earlier than usual so that it's in good time to celebrate Halloween with a spooky treat. Here are some pictures from my early Halloween celebrations last weekend as a teaser.

If you've been meaning to visit Marble Hill House (in Twickenham) this year, you need to get a move on. The house is open free from Wednesday to Sunday this week from 10.00 to 4.00 and after that it closes for the winter.

This is what you will see if you visit my website (but only if you're quick). If you want to keep in touch in the future, you'll need to go to my Substack: substack.com/@tomwilliams...

The rose garden at Hyde Park still thinks it's summer. Really lovely there today.

My Substack this week carries on with the story of Napoleon after he escaped from Elba and visits the National Army Museum to explore the War of 1812. Plus a staggeringly beautiful church you've probably never visited.

Why has Marble Hill House (literally) put this table on a pedestal?
September 4, 2025 at 5:23 PM
I was in the breakfast room at Marble Hill today. The table is laid for tea. Tea was quite a thing in the mid-18th century.
Marble Hill House will be open on Bank Holiday Monday and is, as ever, free.

You can read about this 18th century Chinese wallpaper at Blickling Hall on my blog. I've got so excited about Chinese wallpaper that I've done Tiktok on it. Links to both in comments. #History

What do you do when it's a little bit hot? You go on a nine-mile skate round London, of course.
Fabulous Sunday Stroll yesterday.

This picture of the Duchess of Queensberry hangs in Marble Hill House. She features in last week's blog post.

Just saw this today. OK, it's a niche category (Amazon chose it, not me) but this has always struggled to find readers (though it's my personal favourite), so I'll take #53 four years after re-publishing it (when I got the rights back).
You can find it at my.book/Cawnpore for just £3.99.

Amazon are changing print costs which means that many of my paperbacks will see a small increase in price over the next few weeks. If you are thinking of buying one, now would be a good time.
