That sounds like a book I want to read. My great uncle (and namesake) had just finished medical school when the US entered the war. He became a medic and was in North Africa, Italy, and was at the liberation of Dachau. After the war, he never became a doctor or really did much of anything

Lots of men came home from the war badly damaged, having seen and/or done terrible things, and never fully recovered. Howard Unruh, Peak Male!
