@geofflemon.bsky.social @maxrushden.bsky.social Hi both, not sure if you’re taking listener thoughts re Ashes Weekly, but re the interview today with England’s mind guru(?) it would be lovely if we could stop comparing playing any sort of sport with fighting in a war? (1/2)

@geofflemon.bsky.social Wait. What? Actually not in the top 50 at all?

@pamhutch.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I really enjoyed your vamp talk tonight

@alexvont.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I really enjoyed the Nellie Bly episode of History’s Heroes. Got me wondering whether she might have been the inspiration for Shock Corridor?

Beef and Dairy Live today was hilarious, joyous and at times genuinely disturbing. Huge thanks to @beefanddairy.bsky.social @benpartridge.bsky.social and all involved!

@johnrain.co.uk PLEASE WATCH AND THEN TALK ABOUT CREED 2!! It’s way better than it needs to be and if you love Rocky 4 it really delivers.

@theamynicholson.bsky.social Yes! Please talk about Nightcrawler. High up on my list of great movies I never want to watch again and Gyllenhaal is amazing in it. I think I also read that it was based on The Cameraman, which is nuts.

@christinalefou.bsky.social I went to see The French Connection today (which still absolutely slaps) - it reminded me of your excellent intro to Serpico a while back. 70s cope movies really haven’t been bettered.

@maxrushden.bsky.social I trust @jonawils.bsky.social has thanked you for digging him out of his Igor grave?

@thehighsign.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I got a bit emotional reading the chapter on Buster’s drinking. Don’t think I’ve ever read anything so human about that part of his life, every other biography seems to treat it as just a blur to get past not part of a life lived.

@thehighsign.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I’m midway through a Camera Man reread and I strongly agree with you re Steamboat Bill. Maybe not that it’s my favourite (that’s choosing my favourite from several things I love unconditionally!) but on the business with the bread

@drlindseyfitz.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say thanks for that, it was super interesting! I slightly showed up under false pretences because I haven’t read the book (became aware of you through your radio show on Gillies) but I shall rectify that!

@moviessilently.bsky.social So, I saw Raskolnikov (1923) at the BFI today and it’s…..great, a tough watch but great (and assisted on this occasion by a fabulous viola accompaniment).

I’m sure you’re already well aware of it, but just wanted to share some enthusiasm!

@alexvont.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I really enjoyed your History’s Heroes on Harold Gillies. I had some general awareness of plastic surgery jumping forwards because of WWI, but you added so much more.

@theamynicholson.bsky.social Just dipping in to Unspooled (the AFI wrap up episode right now) and I’m repeatedly struck by how different the sensibilities of your country is to mine (or maybe the relevance or different movies to each culture). I think we might be more different than I thought!

@theamynicholson.bsky.social Oh, sorry, missed your instruction. Hello! My favourite movie is The Apartment because every part of it (funny and tragic) works perfectly and it’s a movie about how people really behave, not how movies have them behave.

Learning point from last night - Canada does not have comedy election candidates that the prime minister has to line up beside in a school sports hall. Hear me out on this - are some aspects of the UK….a bit weird?
April 29, 2025 at 4:00 PM
@wesleyball.bsky.social I only learnt today that Canada doesn’t have joke candidates in fancy dress that the prime minister has to line up with in a school sports hall. I sometimes think we underestimate quite how weird our country is.

@gralefrit.bsky.social I don’t know if you somehow fixed it for Ep5 of Broken Veil to get stuck and endlessly repeat “Oh my god. Of the scratching mass.” (kudos if so!), but either way it properly creeped me out.

@philippeauclair.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I really enjoyed your thoughts on Kvaratskhelia on the pod. I love him in sort of the same way as I love Jasprit Bumrah - showing that the very highest levels of sport still still be dominated by the slightly ungainly.
April 10, 2025 at 8:49 PM
@pamhutch.bsky.social Hi, just saw Flow and wondered if you’d caught it yet? Amongst other things, an interesting addition to the modern silents genre?

@chrishewitt.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I strongly support your bold position re Gerard Butler/Dracula 2000.

@maxrushden.bsky.social Hi, quick thought for the next pod. Why is Alejandro Garnacho being punished by being made to buy dinner for the only Man Utd employees who still get free meals anyway? Might at least some of his teammates not feel uncomfortable about this?
February 28, 2025 at 5:01 PM
@christinalefou.bsky.social Just saw Kiss Me Deadly. Wow, that ending goes hard.
