and less American consumers buying items means you don't collect as much of this tax as you thought if you did 0 research and thought that spending habbits wouldn't change due to tarrifs and that the government would just make whatever % the tarrifs were. The administration in the US is a circus.

MAGA really bought the idea that the other country would "pay" for the tarrifs even though that's not how it works, the market cools on imported goods due to higher pricing and then country y is selling less of x to American importers but they're still getting the usual payment for what they do sell

Importer increases their price to resellers 50%, resellers increase price to customers 50%

Customers can't charge anyone so they buy less.
