I teach at a community college and I can confirm that it's an unmitigated disaster and an existential catastrophe. I can't imagine any believable route to a human future under these circumstances.

'Man' might do, or 'friend'. But I don't know that language "to lift men up" is really necessary when there's a concrete issue; addressing that directly, as if it (and hence the questioner) mattered, probably conveys the appropriate respect (and in a less decorative — more "manly" — sort of way).

...and there's a small number of people who either like haggling, or are good at it, or both, and they don't understand that the rest of us are not like them. Unfortunately, those people are peculiarly inclined to be economists and policy wonks and try to craft what they imagine we would want.
