Rank-and-file organizing with UAWD in Detroit / Working on science and governance of the energy transition
Anyone looking to understand the restructuring of the North American auto industry should grapple with this long-but-useful piece by Sam Gindin:

"Canadian Auto Isn’t in ‘Crisis’, It’s in Danger of Extinction"

Work in the auto industry is often considered a high road manufacturing job. But UAW parts plants, like this one that makes car seats, often work grueling mandatory hours and in this case were being paid $14/h before UAW Local 1819 organized their contract campaign

UAWD actually went through a split. If you want to learn more about the dispute, check out UAWD's public email: mailchi.mp/b736ebbadeb0...

Especially links in the paragraph starting with: "You may have heard that there was an attempt to undemocratically dissolve UAWD by some of our former leaders

Our inaugural editorial lays out the case for why narrow reform is simply not meeting the current moment: dailystruggle.org/uawd-launchi...

How can you look at these economic trends and not conclude that something different is needed

After a summer of building, Unite All Workers for Democracy is releasing Daily Struggle

It's a much needed project in a UAW where Locals, esp in manufacturing, are still stagnant & business unionist and the top leadership, which is creating some openings, is turning toward protectionism

Their 2025 Sustainability Report stays committed to their 2030 goal, but does acknowledge "growth-related factors such as AI and cloud expansion."

Let's hope the 6 MtCO2 of removal they're planning on, doesn't burn up in the next California forest fire

As Microsoft's market value hits a record $4 trillion today, the decoupling of their emissions and their 2030 net-zero pledge makes their priorities clear

Too bad we're doing AI right now, I guess we'll deal with the climate thing next time

Not to mention this is plotting electricity and not total energy, which is just misleading. Are you trying to trick yourself or everyone else?

Hits a little different when you zoom out (note this is consumption, not production): ourworldindata.org/energy-mix

Trump and his oligarch cronies are injecting uncertainty into an already bumpy corporate-led EV transition. Now, will EV policy reversals and whirlwind tariffs cause more mass layoffs or another recession?

Join me and my UAWD EV Committee organizers for our analysis & to hear how we can fight back

"The Everglades is a test. If we pass it, we may get to keep the planet."

Got the privilege of spending a few days this winter in this remarkable wetland and share it with alligators, cypress trees, mangroves, crocodiles, egrets, and so many more wild friends.

They cite: "More than 1,000 big companies have pledged to eliminate their carbon emissions over the next few decades."

But don't point out, for example, that Microsoft's emissions have been rising with the AI boom, not falling as they projected in 2020

Ursula Le Guin taking shots at JK Rowling:

"I didn't feel she ripped me off, as some people did, though she could have been more gracious about her predecessors ... She has many virtues, but originality isn't one of them. That hurt."

For those embarking on this work going forward, it’s also helpful to use clear language to describe how changes are made. We’re nerds, so we created a comprehensive taxonomy of every categorically different way (8 classifications) that websites can be altered: sunlightfoundation.com/web-integrit...

We also put together Gov404, a database that aggregates and verifies examples of the most significant cases of online information censorship on the federal web since Nov 2016 (maintained until Feb 2019). We collected 54 cases.

Shifts on gender policy were particularly revealing, for example when HHS removed sex discrimination prohibition language from civil rights office website

Monitoring information like this really showed the underlying policy shifts that the admin was pushing

After launching the Web Integrity Project at the (now-shuttered) Sunlight Foundation, we studied the trend of info erasure about the Affordable Care Act, a law that was on the books (and still is), but which the Trump administration was aiming to take down:

Somehow, surgical word edits seemed particularly sinister. The EPA’s SmartWay program removed “climate change” language, which wasn't restored under Biden.

We collaborated with @archive.org to develop the “Changes” feature, a tool for comparing snapshot diffs:

At EDGI’s Website Monitoring Team, we put out a comprehensive report about climate information being censored across all federal agencies:
envirodatagov.org/publication/...

The removal of the EPA’s climate change website remains one of the most egregious examples of anti-science censorship.

8 years ago, I took leave from my PhD to help fight back against the Trump v1.0 administration’s censorship of online .gov information.

Still most notable is the EPA dismantling its climate change site. And round 2 will likely be worse.

A 🧵with reflections and for those picking this work back up:
