(I’m aware I’m speaking to a climate scientist. McEwan obviously took creative liberties with the uncertainties of sea level rise. He did a good job of building this elegantly into the setting.)

In the novel the rise-over-time was exacerbated by a nuke detonated over the Atlantic. Violent waves destroyed most cities close to the Atlantic. The UK in the aftermath was described as a place in which you couldn’t walk for too long in any direction without getting your feet wet or needing a ferry

The story of Abraham & Isaac is one that has Abraham abandon humanity. He puts faith above love & relationships. Whether he thinks God will return Isaac to him is less relevant than that he doesn‘t think his choice should matter to those he professes to love.
