Any Latinists know why Tolkien used “clamaverimus“ on his prayer card in “Deus in adiutorium nostrum intende et exaudi tua clamaverimus ad te”? 1st half is basically Ps 69. 2nd half is paraphrase of a liturgical expression but I cant think of any use of this conjugation and the meaning seems awkward

Douglas Anderson's new article in the Journal of Tolkien Research concisely summarizes what has long been suspected about Josef Madlener’s “Der Berggeist”: that it is in fact not the “Origin of Gandalf,” despite Tolkien's faulty memory identifying it as such scholar.valpo.edu/cgi/viewcont...

A deluxe edition of The Hobbit illustrated by Alan Lee will be published this year to match last year's 70th anniversary deluxe illustrated Lord of the Rings. A more affordable and more widely available version of the Folio edition released earlier this year. H/T @onthetrail.tolkienguide.com

Via Holly Ordway, some of Tolkien's handwritten annotations in Goldthorpe's "The Same Scourge": "This is magnificent writing - so MUCH in so few words about her who is ἡ θεοτοκος the God-bearer."

This, from Holly Ordway, is significant related to Tolkien's views on Latin in the Mass as well as finally having evidence of Tolkien reading Newman. I look forward to reading Devaux's essay soon.

I finished this. I enjoyed it so much I’m thinking I may do a mini-review of it on my blog soon. A worthy translation by Shippey and a tremendous resource for novices and young students/scholars of Beowulf.
