The man, falling downward, balanced between the dark of the North Tower and the light of the South Tower, seems to embrace his fall.

It captures the feeling that our shared, carefully constructed rules of living had vanished completely from under our feet.

Today, we will solemnly watch replays to remember the shock of falling into that zero-day void.

The photograph of the falling man captures that day for me better than the shaky video of the planes hitting or the dust clouds billowing.

We will never to return to our "before" state.

That day is the zero on our timeline of days, a void poised between the positives and negatives.

Today is the 24th anniversary of 9/11.

It has achieved what few days in any lifetime achieve — a day that divides our lives neatly into the way we were "before" that day and "after. "Before" we were more innocent, less fearful, less scarred. "After" that day we have been irrevocably changed.

Years 25, and 75 are even more venerated than the "zero" years, except for the double zeros of the centenaries. It's complicated.

Our rituals of remembrance can seem as intertwined with number theory as Islamic tessellations.

The Arabs, whose geometric patterning combines mathematics with religiosity, saw in zero a spiritual essence unlike other numbers — a place of complete absence, a dark well of mystery.

Ancient Iraqis had discovered the inverse of infinity's light.

Zero, poised between 1 and -1, was not a number that the Romans knew. There is no void among the letter-numbers of our western European fathers. That concept was born in Babylon, today's city of Hillah, in Iraq. 1/

Mass burning of TRUMP flags, however, is not only an inalienable right, but a darn good excuse for a party.

A hyphenate when being line-broken gets -- two hyphens? Oh, @newyorker.com you are so delightfully mad with your diacritics and punctuations! Only you could make an article on Trump's lawlessness twist into a typographic safari.

HBO best full frontal — the middle-aged fat coal miner boss in “Chernobyl” coming off a shift of digging the water tunnel under the meltdown in 130 degree heat and radiation. Guy trudged out w/ his lil Putin and truly didn’t GAFF. #respect

@stefanbucher.bsky.social, this is how the package arrived today. Between LA weather and STL postal carriers, it never really had a chance. (Everything inside was 💯! Thanks!!)

Found a box of books I’d long packed away, and just opened it this weekend. This book was right on top, like it was pounding on a door trying to get out.

Time to get to work.

Trump is “moving fast and breaking things”.

Breaking our air safety.
Breaking a 16-year streak without air crash fatalities.
Breaking our military.
Breaking the hearts of American families devastated by lost love ones.

Trump is broken. And he’s breaking our country.

Faces made in pews at the National Cathedral, hearing pleas of mercy and compassion.

“Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation. To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without virtue in the people, is a chimerical idea.”
