Last little note about the drill arm blast was intentionally made to be in my words, alien. Something not seen before taking a flame thrower effect and adding a crystal effect to it and other elements.

Exist. Which of course they used a couple examples for. First being the water in the plant tank in Jeneora Rock. They were given the instruction to make "interesting water" 😂
The second example was the drill arm effect and how it was instructed to be both beautiful and gross.

They worked a lot with references when they could, including mocap in their own studio which they showed clips of. As well as visiting and dunes for inspiration for the desert setting. But the VFX team was told by the director a number of times to include things that didn't-

However it's possible this was done to add more depth into their characters as well.

The producer mentioned in response to a question that Wolfwoods backstory was in a different style to possibly show that it was a way to look back on the memories from Wolfwoods point of view
