Arrays are fine but rote memorization is key! I am also a teacher and have been for many years.

Teach them the way you were taught. Make sure they MEMORIZE multiplication facts. Drill them! Don’t count on schools, and don’t blame teachers. The curriculum they must teach is dictated to them.
