Somewhere in the back of Goro’s mind — between gasps for air and the sensation of having Akira’s living, breathing body beneath her hands — she wonders if it’s foolish to move so fast. Akira moans softly as Goro’s fingers presses against her through the tiny shorts, and the doubt clears. Every motion is carefree and uninhibited by all the what ifs that plagued Goro in her teens. For once, she can finally pour herself out, heedless of any risk it might pose to her. The worst that can happen now is heartbreak. You’re forgetting that he invited you first.” Akira’s hands twist in his jacket pockets. “He could regret it and just be too polite to say so.” Goro stops walking and after a sizable distance between them, Akira turns to look at him. “What?” His husband levels an expression of exhausted patience at him. “When have you ever known Sakamoto to not speak his mind?”

Reaching for the box, Akira's mind free falls into his memories. A wretched trip down memory lane. The nauseating smell of freshly cloroxed floors, the overly bright fluorescent lights, his shaking hands as he selects a pregnancy test. Seventeen. All alone in a small town that never wanted him. He kept it a secret for months until he decided to keep the baby. His father was angry he insisted on being a parent. His mother called him a slut who deserved the poverty a child would bring. He never mentioned Goro. Somehow it was easier to pretend the pregnancy happened because of a fling instead of one night of desperately poor choices. A light overhead buzzes, jarring Akira out of his thoughts. Though, barely anything has changed. The overly astringent cleaner burns his nose, the lights stir a migraine in the back of his head, and his hands shake as he pulls free a pregnancy test. Twenty-four. All alone in a big city that will swallow him whole.
